Mitchell along with her mother relocated from Dallas Texas in 1970 where her mother married Joseph Mitchell in 1975. Mitchell was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts which is a magnet public school. The eldest sister of Katherine Day Kate Mitchell, Kristina Helen Kristie Mitchell, and Kristina Mitchell.
